Tesla is bringing the long-wheelbase Model Y L to the U.S. as a larger, more practical three-row electric vehicle. Designed to fill part of the gap left by the discontinued Model X, the new Model Y L adds significant passenger space while retaining Tesla's performance, fast charging and technology-focused interior.
More Space Without Becoming a Huge SUV
The biggest difference between the Model Y L and the standard Model Y is its size. The long-wheelbase version is approximately 7.0 inches longer, with 5.9 inches added to the wheelbase. It is also almost two inches taller, creating more room for passengers in the second and third rows.
Tesla says the third row gains around 3.5 inches of additional headroom and 5.2 inches of extra rear legroom. The longer proportions also give the vehicle a more balanced appearance, making it look surprisingly close to a modern electric station wagon rather than a typical compact SUV.
496 Horsepower and 325 Miles of Range
The Model Y L Premium uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system rated at 496 horsepower. Tesla claims a 0–60 mph time of just 4.4 seconds, while models equipped with 19-inch wheels can deliver up to 325 miles of range. Choosing the new 20-inch Uberhelix wheels reduces the claimed range to 320 miles.
The vehicle weighs more than 4600 pounds, but its acceleration remains characteristically strong for a Tesla. A slightly larger battery helps compensate for the additional mass of the longer body.
Faster Charging and Energy-Sharing Capability
The Model Y L uses an approximately 83-kWh battery pack and supports both vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-home functionality. This allows the vehicle's battery to be used as an energy source for compatible equipment or potentially a home.
Tesla says the Model Y L can add up to 164 miles of range in approximately 15 minutes using a Supercharger. During testing, the vehicle was able to recharge from 60 to 80 percent in less than eight minutes.
Comfort Gets a Major Upgrade
One of the most important improvements is the suspension. The Model Y L uses adaptive damping with a specific calibration for its longer chassis. Tesla has focused on improving ride comfort without sacrificing the vehicle's handling capabilities.
A dedicated passenger-comfort setting is designed to reduce impacts for people sitting in the rear. Wider rear tires also contribute to stability and comfort when the vehicle is carrying several passengers and a full load of luggage.
Three Rows and Flexible Cargo Space
The Model Y L is designed to be considerably more practical than the standard five-seat configuration. Tesla claims 15 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats raised and up to 90 cubic feet with the seats folded.
Additional storage is found underneath the cargo floor and in deep side compartments. The vehicle also retains its front trunk, giving owners another useful area for smaller luggage and equipment.
The seats can be controlled from both the rear of the vehicle and the driver's seat. Clever folding mechanisms allow the second and third rows to create a flat loading surface, making the Model Y L suitable for everything from luggage to large cargo.
A More Premium Interior
The interior of the Model Y L is also more upscale than earlier Model Y cabins. Tesla combines faux suede, faux leather, patterned fabric and ambient lighting to create a more comfortable atmosphere.
The second-row captain's chairs are particularly impressive. They recline and offer heating and ventilation, while an 8.0-inch rear touchscreen provides access to climate and entertainment controls.
The third row is more suitable for children and smaller adults, although Tesla has equipped those seats with heating, charging ports, cupholders, air vents and side airbags. Access is through the center because the second-row captain's chairs do not fold or slide.
Technology-Focused Cabin
Up front, the Model Y L features a 16.0-inch central infotainment screen and a 19-speaker audio system. Tesla continues to rely heavily on touchscreen controls, while its Grok voice assistant can help with navigation and conversation.
There is also wireless smartphone charging for two devices and additional storage throughout the cabin. However, the cooled phone-charging feature available in some other markets is not offered on the U.S.-specification vehicle.
Full Self-Driving and Everyday Usability
The Model Y L also benefits from Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system. During testing, the system handled highway driving, lane changes, cyclists and congested intersections effectively, demonstrating why the long-wheelbase Model Y could become a practical family vehicle for everyday travel.
Can the Tesla Model Y L Reinvent the Station Wagon?
The Model Y L occupies an interesting position between an SUV, a family hauler and a modern station wagon. It provides three rows, substantial cargo capacity, strong electric performance and a more comfortable cabin without growing into the size of a traditional full-size SUV.
For drivers who want an electric vehicle with extra passenger space and long-distance capability, the Model Y L could become one of Tesla's most practical models yet.
